Flip the Script: Shelley Hershberger, Bunger Middle School
Shelley Hershberger, an Instructional Strategist at Bunger, is on a mission to ensure every student feels seen and supported. By opening "The Den," Shelley has flipped the script on the traditional classroom, creating a safe, inclusive space where her Wolves feel respected and accepted for exactly who they are.
Shelley’s goal this year is to transform the way students view struggle. She encourages them to see challenges not as obstacles, but as opportunities for growth. Whether she’s celebrating a "big win" or navigating a tough day, Shelley is the ultimate teammate for her students and the Bunger family.
"I got into teaching because I truly want to be someone who supports, encourages, and believes in students—especially on the days when they may not believe in themselves," Shelley says. "It is a privilege to be part of their journey."
With her #Adaptable spirit, Shelley constantly pivots to bring order and success to the classroom, proving that even in the chaos, there is always room to thrive!
Flip the Script: Kasey Vanausdeln, Art Teacher at Bunger Middle School
For Kasey Vanausdeln, the art room isn't just a place for paint and pencils—it’s a place where chaos transforms into community. As the 6-8 Art Teacher, PBIS Coordinator, and Yearbook Co-Editor at Bunger, Kasey wears many hats, but her mission remains the same: providing an inclusive environment where every student can find their unique creative voice.
Kasey is flipping the script by shifting the focus from discipline to celebration. Through her work with PBIS, she’s helping the Bunger Wolves lead with their strengths, recognizing the positive contributions students make to their school every day. This year, she’s taking it a step further by empowering her 8th graders with open-studio choices and involving students in the planning of major school events. From the hype of the PBIS Dodgeball tournaments to the quiet focus of a mural project, Kasey is dedicated to making every student’s "adventure" at Bunger a masterpiece.
"If all artwork was the same, it would be a very boring gallery," says Vanausdeln. "We should embrace all of the uniqueness that everyone brings to the community. My favorite thing about Waterloo is the diversity and the sense of community we are building within our school."
Instead of letting the busy energy of middle school feel overwhelming, Kasey embraces the messiness of the creative process, knowing that the most amazing growth often comes from those unexpected moments.

Flip the Script: Darius Hart, School Counselor at Bunger Middle School
After more than a decade in the corporate sales world, Darius Hart reached a pivotal realization: he wanted to use his natural ability to connect with people to make a deeper, more lasting impact. Taking a leap of faith, he traded the boardroom for the counselor’s office, joining the Waterloo Schools team to help students navigate the "life stuff" that happens outside the textbook.
Darius flips the script by turning complex emotions and difficult situations into opportunities for growth. For him, there is no greater joy than helping a student process what’s happening in their heart and brain so they can eventually navigate those challenges on their own. By modeling authentic relationships and honesty, he is building a stronger support system for both his students and his colleagues.
"I love having complex conversations with kids in preparation for life," says Hart. "Talking things out, processing feelings, and discussing next steps brings me joy, knowing that I may be the only one having these kinds of conversations with them!"
Whether he’s meeting a student for the first time or running into a former student years later who remembers his impact, Darius remains committed to crushing barriers through honest, upfront communication.
Flip the Script: Greldi, 8th Grade at Bunger Middle School
Greldi is proof that the most powerful thing you can be is yourself! This year, the Bunger 8th grader decided to flip the script on "fitting in." After realizing that acting out to match the crowd wasn't the real her, she committed to showing her true colors, following the rules, and leading with kindness. Now, she’s known for her energy, her smile, and her incredible speed on the track!
Whether she’s dominating the 100m and 200m sprints or playing volleyball and soccer, Greldi thrives in Bunger’s welcoming atmosphere. She is already looking forward to joining the soccer team at East High next year and eventually traveling the world as a doctor to help those in need.
"My advice to incoming 6th graders is to learn from my mistakes and start the year off right by just being yourself," Greldi says. "Show your true colors and don't give in to peer pressure."
We are so proud of Greldi for choosing to lead by example and making the most of her 8th-grade year!
Flip the Script: Ramarion, 8th Grade at Bunger Middle School
If you walk into the Bunger main office, chances are you’ll be greeted by Ramarion’s "easy flow" and infectious energy. As a standout athlete in track, basketball, football, and wrestling, Ramarion has officially flipped the script on his middle school journey. Once a student who found himself in trouble, he has transformed into a dedicated leader who gives 110% to set a powerful example for his younger siblings.
For Ramarion, Bunger is a second home where teachers feel like family. He has traded "acting out" for lifting others up, making it his mission to keep his teammates happy and engaged, even when the game gets tough.
"This year, I wanted to focus on being a leader for myself and others," Ramarion says. "Bunger is a great place to connect with students and staff to get you going in the right direction."
Whether he’s cracking a joke to spread some joy or pursuing his dreams of a career in sports, Ramarion is showing the pack what it means to stay positive and lead with heart!
Flip the Script: Dayshaun, 7th Grade at Bunger Middle School
Dayshaun is a leader who knows that the hardest battles are won long before the first bell rings. A three-time National Boxing Champion, Dayshaun has been honing his craft since he was six years old after seeing boxing gloves on a family trip. This year, he’s flipping the script by bringing that same championship discipline into the halls of Bunger. Once a student who struggled with staying on track, Dayshaun made a choice to lead by example for his younger siblings and to make his mom proud.
Whether he’s calling plays as a point guard on the basketball court or traveling across the country for his next title bout, Dayshaun balances his "student-athlete" title with pride. For him, respect and dedication are the keys to belonging in the Wolf Pack.
"I wanted to show what it meant to be a leader and a good role model," Dayshaun says. "My advice to others is to ignore the negative and don't let others bring you down. Rise above the hate and try your best to thrive."
From the boxing ring to the classroom, Dayshaun is proving that with a little bravery and a lot of heart, you can steer your own journey in the right direction!
Flip the Script: Norman, 6th Grade at Bunger Middle School
Norman may have started middle school with a shy side, but he has officially flipped the script and won over the entire Wolf Pack! Whether he’s flexing his "work hard" muscles or making everyone laugh with a joke, Norman has become a joyful force around the building. He’s mastered the transition to 6th grade by starting every morning with positive affirmations and even "graduating" to sport mode on his wheelchair—perfect for navigating the Bunger hallways while jamming to KISS or "Bohemian Rhapsody."
Norman is also preparing for a big new role as a member of the soon-to-be Bunger Brew Crew, where he’ll help roll out the new coffee cart service. Between his helpful nature and his love for Takis, he has truly become the heart of the school.
"Norman's goals are to keep people smiling and be a positive force," says Miss Doland. "He has learned how to ask for help when he needs it and has become a great friend to others."
With a smile that lights up the room, Norman is proving that being a leader is all about hard work, kindness, and a great sense of humor!
Flip the Script: Nehemiah, 8th Grade at Bunger Middle School
If you ask the Bunger front office about Nehemiah, you’ll get a unanimous cheer! This standout 8th grader has officially flipped the script on his middle school journey. After facing some tough times in 6th grade, Nehemiah decided it was time to buckle down, be true to himself, and step into his role as a leader. Today, he is a straight-A student, the President of iJAG, and a powerful voice for his peers.
From finding his confidence through iJAG to speaking in front of state officials, Nehemiah has mastered the art of public speaking. Whether he’s on the basketball court or helping set up the New Year’s dance, he leads by being his authentic self. He’s already looking toward the future, with dreams of becoming a dentist so he can help others find the perfect smile!
"Being a member of the Wolf Pack means you're outgoing, helpful, authentic, and proud," Nehemiah says. "Don’t be different just to stand out for the wrong reasons—always be yourself."
Nehemiah is proof that when you focus on being a better person, you don't just find your crowd—you lead them!
